Advertising and Marketing
As a copywriter and creative director at Hakuhodo, Japan’s second largest advertising agency, John participated in successful pitches to Canon, Unilever, Coca-Cola, BMW, Tiffany, Buena Vista International, and Mazda.
Finance and Investor Relations
Ruth has translated fixed income, stock, and fund analysis reports for Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, and the Norinchukin Bank. Plus annual reports including KDD, Sharp, Daiwa Securities, and Hakuhodo DY, and reports and instruction manuals for the Nikkei’s financial databases.
Our areas of expertise include ceramics (translations of over 100 books about Japanese ceramic arts), textiles (catalogues for the Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo), photography (catalogues for the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography), ukiyo-e (including the 2005 Hokusai exhibition at the Tokyo National Museum), modern art, and much, much more.
Science and Technology
Are we scientists or engineers? No. But Ruth is the daughter of an electrical engineer whose hobby was making model gasoline engines in his basement machine shop. She has run a lathe, programmed in FORTRAN and assembly language, maintains our network, and loves to figure out how to make things work. Geology and geomorphology are personal interests. John is an anthropologist and avid reader of science news and once spent a year working as a research assistant in an artificial intelligence project at Yale University. Both are early adopters of personal computers and other digital technology.
